There are over 25 different Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), some are curable, some incurable, and some lead to death.

Symptoms may include:  
• Discharge from the penis or vagina  
• Rashes and Sores on skin  
• Painful urination  
• Blisters, sores, and itching on or around genitals
• Damage to internal organs  
• Fever and headaches  
• Abdominal pain  
• Strong Odor

Permanent damage from STDs include: chronic pelvic pain, infertility, cervical cancer, major body organ damage, and death.

Curable STDs:  
Chlamydia  
Gonorrhea  
Syphilis  
Trichomoniasis  
Pubic Lice/ Crabs

Incurable STDs:  
Herpes  
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)  
HIV/AIDS

Antibiotics can be taken for both curable and incurable STDs. Other ways of removing STDs is through burning, cutting, or chemically removing sores. Do not think that curable STDs do not cause harm to you body, long term effects include infertility, nerve damage, bone damage, organ damage, blindness and more.  

Statistics on STDs  
• Over 70 million Americans are infected by a STD.
• In the U.S. 8,000 teens will contract an STD everyday.  
• 1 in 4 sexually active teens will contact a STD before the age of 18.  
• Women with HPV have a 95% chance of getting cervical cancer.  
• There were approximately 14,000 cases of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, HIV and AIDS reported in North Carolina for the first three months of 2005.  
• Nash County ranks 24th in the state for reported HIV/AIDS and Edgecombe County ranks 2nd in the state.

Prevention Facts    
• Condoms often fail, and many STDs are transferred through skin to skin contact.  
• STD can be spread through oral sex.  
• Even if you only have one partner, if either of you have had partners in the past you could still become infected. Many people never have symptoms for STDs.
